Prison Break 215-The Message

January 30, 2007
THE GOOD

Only on Prison Break, can three guys manage to walk out of the front door in a place surrounded by cops and the media AND still manage to get away. Sucre returns and he is getting closer to Maricruz. He encounters help along the way. Mahone shows his FBI savvy skills when he figures out Michael and Lincoln’s declaration of innocence. All I can say is how does he do it?

THE BAD

Haywire returns but his new friend’s Sasha’s abusive father brings back terrible memories of his own. So he ends up dealing with her problem the same way he dealt with his. Nice to see that Bellick got the beating of his life from Banks and company. Certainly a twist of fate. And asking Katie to leave the door open for you?! Oh no, he did not go there! Caroline calls Kellerman and tries to win him back. Whose side is he really on?

THE PRETTY

What an elaborate way to send out a message! Twenty-six minutes of hidden messages hoping that his lady love would figure it out. Sara does and sends her own message to “Michael Crane.” I personally liked “Origami” better. Hey Michael, do you know that Nathan Petrelli borrowed your traveling suit?

Learn photography with free online course

January 27, 2007

photography%20course.png

Freelance photographer Jodie Coston offers a free online course in photography, covering everything from aperture to zoom.

The course is divided into 10 lessons, each presented with loads of sample photos and assignments at the end. Coston employs a friendly, personal style and provides plain-English descriptions of complicated subjects. Even better, host site morgueFile maintains a separate discussion board for each of the lessons, so you can ask questions, share info with your "classmates," etc. This course is actually a couple years old, but it's still an excellent introduction to photography. It's too bad you can't download the lessons as PDFs–they're HTML only–but that's a minor gripe. You won't want to miss this one.

Over One Billion Sold…Calculators

January 24, 2007

casio-calculator.jpg

Back in 1957, Casio invented the first fully electric compact relay calculator. It took 50 years, but Casio has just announced that they've sold one billion calculators worldwide. And it's a good thing they developed calculators, because one billion would have taken Casio 31 years to count manually.

But this achievement is actually a bit sad for two reasons…

1. The first quantifiable comparison I could make would be McDonald's "billions and billions served", or however that goes. Of course we eat more hamburgers than we do calculators, but it still feels like a loss.

2. Will Casio ever sell another billion? Will dedicated calculators even be around in another 50 years with the cost-effective advancements in microprocessors and all-in-one devices? Should they?

What do you think?

Firefox Quick Tip: Drag and drop URL text

January 7, 2007

Next time you stumble onto an unlinked URL while browsing in Firefox (i.e., the text of a URL that’s missing the link anchor to make it clickable), highlight and then drag and drop the text to the address bar and be instantly swept away to said URL.

Of course you probably already knew that you can drag and drop text (and even clickable links) in this manner, but what’s neat about this little trick is that after you drop the URL text in the address bar, it instantly executes the URL (provided it starts with http://); regular text won’t execute in the address bar. On the other hand, dragging and dropping regular text to the Firefox search bar will automatically execute the search, offering another quick way to perform a text search. None of this will rock anyone’s world, but these are nice tricks to have on hand for the right situations. Thanks Murray!

How to wrap a headphone cord

January 4, 2007

Tired of constantly having to de-tangle your headphone cord every time you pull your iPod out of your bag? The do-it-yourselfers at Daily DIY show off a simple method for keeping your cord neatly wrapped.

Okay, nothing too revolutionary here–I use the same method for wrapping extension cords. Of course, you can also wrap the cord around the player itself, then secure it with a rubber band. Got a better idea for keeping headphone cords neat? Share it in the comments.
