Sync your Firefox extensions and profiles across computers

June 27, 2007

ffox-sync.png
Since the dawn of time, humanity has longed for a simple way to sync Firefox extensions, themes, bookmarks, and saved passwords between computers so that no matter where you're working, your browser is customized in the exact same way—the way you always intended it.

Verily I say unto you, I have seen the road to synchronization! The solution comes in the form of the Microsoft-owned folder syncing and sharing tool, FolderShare. It requires a small sacrifice, but in exchange you'll receive the complete automated extension sync we've all been dying for for. Hit the jump to find out how.

The great thing about this method is that not only does it sync all of your extensions, but it also syncs almost all of your profile data. That means that your browsing session, bookmarks, themes, saved passwords, about:config settings, search engines, Greasemonkey scripts, etc. will all sync as well. What's more, this method works across both Windows and Mac (sorry Linux users). Sounds pretty good, right? Let's dive in.

Speed up file copying with TeraCopy [freeware]

June 20, 2007

teracopy.png
Free file-copying utility TeraCopy speeds up file transfers and can pause, resume and test file copy operations. With TeraCopy you can:

Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.
Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer.

You can also use TeraCopy to diff the contents of two directories by running a "Test" copy, which shows you which files exist in the destination directory as compared to the source. If you've ever had Windows fail at the very last minute of a multi-gigabyte file copy, TeraCopy's for you. TeraCopy is a free download for home use for Windows. Thanks, lifehacker

New 1TB HardDisks…

June 19, 2007

Months after Hitachi announced their big 3.5-inch, 1TB drive, Samsung and Seagate have finally matched that capacity by sheepishly launching their own 3Gbps SATA disks. Sammy does it all with efficiency boy, by spinning 3x 334GB platters to Hitachi's 5x 200GB platters (10 heads) or Seagate's 4 platters (8 heads) of 250GB each. That little trick should keep the weight, decibels, and power draw of their SpinPoint F1 (pictured) to a minimum. Hitachi's Deskstar 7K1000 still packs that impressive 32MB buffer which Samsung and Seagate can only aspire to with their 16MBs of respective cache. Expect both of the newcomers to be priced around $400. Cheap, but we'll be holding our wad for the inevitable head-to-head (to-head) shootout we're sure somebody is cooking up.

Youtube Mobile

June 17, 2007

YouTube launched a mobile interface available at m.youtube.com. To use it, you need a mobile phone that plays streaming videos (RTSP/3GP with H263/AMR) and an unlimited data plan because "YouTube Mobile is a data intensive application". Most 3G phones support 3GP, but you can also play these files on your computer if you have a player like MPlayer, VLC, RealPlayer or Quicktime.

Only a small part of YouTube's videos are available in the mobile version and that includes short videos that were recently uploaded or popular. There are also three special categories: people, entertainment and "grab bag" and a search box that lets you find videos.

PrisonBreak Season3

June 11, 2007

Looks like we’ll have new characters, lots of action, and a change of heart in next season!

Executive producer Paul Scheuring says: Sona Penitentiary is the antithesis of Fox River. Five minutes into the new season, Micheal will virtually be pining for the sanity and safety of Fox River. And, of course, there’s a little matter of the secret concealed in the crawl space beneath the A wing…

When Prison Break unspools the latest leg in Michael and Linc’s ongoing quest for truth, justice and the American way, expect to see some new faces enter the mix. According to the Reporter, with Mikey and some of the gang now holed away in a squalid Panama prison, the show is casting a mysterious and (of course) wrongfully imprisoned fisherman, said fisherman’s beautiful girlfriend, a Panamanian drug lord and a female operative for a government conspiracy group.

Next season, will Prison Break be all about breaking out of jail again? Executive producer Paul Scheuring says: It will start with that, but by the mid-point of the season Michael will find himself immersed in circumstances far removed from the aims that drove him in the previous two seasons – escape and exoneration.

Toshiba’s Qosmios Getting World’s First 0.5-inch HD DVD-RW Drive

June 4, 2007

HD DVD fans are getting a double helping of good news this morning thanks to Toshiba. Their SD-L912A is not only the first HD DVD-RW drive for laptops, but measuring in at half an inch thick, it’s also the slimmest. Sure, it’s slow (1x read/write speeds) and faster drives are bound to follow, but for now it’s the only option available. It’ll be out this July.
